Watch: Police and SANDF target lockdown rebels following late-night attack on police station

Sophiatown – A number of people have already been arrested during an operation to clamp down on lockdown rebels.

Members of the Sophiatown Police Station, along with members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) are today embarking on an operation wherein a number of people have already been arrested.

The operation was spurred on after a number of people reportedly were arrested yesterday by Sophiatown police for not adhering to lockdown regulations. Members of the community then allegedly attacked the Sophiatoen police station last night in retaliation.

 

These videos were supplied to Northcliff Melville Times and show the chaos that ensued on the evening of 20 April. Northcliff Melville Times has not yet been able to establish exactly what happened during the incident, but has requested information, and will update this story as soon as the information becomes available.

In response, police and the SANDF are today conducting an operation within the area, to further target community members not adhering to lockdown regulations. So far, about 15 people have been arrested.

Those arrested have not yet been charged, and it is not yet clear what charges they will face. Northcliff Melville Times will get comment from all relevant parties, and will update as soon as possible.
