Scout needs your support

CRAIGHALL – With all the air pollution and climate change going on, one Scout aims to make a difference with the help of community members.

Fabian de Giandomenico is a Scout at the 1st Craighall Park Scout troop and he is very passionate about the environment. The Linden resident loves birds, animals and trees so what affects the environment affects him.

“I started Scouts at the end of 2015. I found out about it through my aunt because I was home-schooled by her. Because of home-schooling, socialising with other children my age was a bit hard. My parents wanted me to socialise with other people so they decided Scouts was the best idea,” said de Giandomenico. He added that this was his fourth year of scouting.

De Giandomenico said he was required to do a community service project as part of his Springbok badge. “You get different badges which lead up to your Springbok badge. The Springbok badge is the highest award you can get in scouting. So there are a whole lot of different things that you need to do like organise a camp, expedition, as well as your major project.”

The community service requirement stated that he needed to find a need in the community. The Scout said he noticed that air pollution is bad while insect life and birdlife is also deteriorating at quite a fast rate. So, he came up with the idea of planting trees and shrubs around Delta Park and fundraising to buy trees, to encourage bird and insect life as well as fight air pollution along with visual pollution as well.

De Giandomenico explained that with the badges before the Springbok badge, one has adults working with them and if anything goes wrong, they turn to the adults. With the Springbok badge, he is the adult so he took responsibility for everything and he picked a group of Scouts that would assist him to run the project.

“I want to do a big jumble sale on 29 February and for that, I plan to get a whole lot of staff to sell and with that money, which needs to be R12 000, I will buy the trees. I am aiming to plant at least 30 trees and 20 spekboom shrubs. I will happily collect in and around the Randburg, Linden, Cresta, Melville, Craighall areas. Donations of trees or shrubs/bushes would also be amazing as the more plant we have the better. The trees I will be planting and needing are erythrina tree, white stinkwood, monkey thorn, wild olive and spekboom.”
