Keeping Sector 3 safe this festive season

ROOSEVELT PARK – Staying safe until we meet again in 2020.

Sector 3 crime forum hosted their final meeting for the decade.

What a year it has been for the Sophiatown Sector 3 crime forum. They participated in various safety and security activities throughout the year, hosted meetings with the community and relevant security role players in the area and helped fight crime. On 19 November they hosted their final public meeting for the year and elected their new executive committee.

Members of the new executive committee:

  • Sophiatown Sector 3 Crime Forum executive committee chairperson: Andrew Burger
  • Deputy chairperson: Ismail Patel
  • Secretary: Bianca de Villiers
  • Deputy secretary: Naeem Ally
  • Public relations officer: Demetri Syriopoulos
  • Sophiatown Police Station Sector 3 manager: Warrant Officer Koos Steyn
  • Sophiatown Police Station social crime coordinator: Captain Makwenete Matshaba

The crime forum covers the suburbs of Roosevelt Park, Montgomery Park, East Town, Waterval Estate, Northcliff Ext 13 and Westpark Cemetery. Chairperson of the forum, Andrew Burger, reminded residents and businesses in these areas that they all have to work together to reduce crime. According to Burger, crime in the sector has gone up over the last year but he is resolute that there will be a positive change in the near future. The sector is looking forward to their 53 newly vetted patrollers who will hit the streets to keep the area safer.

Sophiatown Sector 3 Crime Forum shared the following tips to assist people during the upcoming festive season:

  • If going away, make sure all your alarms work and notify your security company
  • Ensure that all doors are locked and windows closed before leaving your home or vehicle
  • Stay vigilant at all times
  • Keep a list of emergency numbers near at all times
  • Establish relationships with your neighbours and people on your road
  • Be careful of posting your location and activities on social media
  • Be cautious when driving
  • Avoid driving under the influence of any substance
  • Avoid reckless driving and behaviour
  • Report all crime incidents to your nearest police station.

Burger hopes to see more members of the community attend their monthly meetings next year. At the meetings, residents get the chance to communicate their safety and security concerns with the police, ward councillors, Metro police and security companies directly. The first meeting for next year will be on 21 January at 7pm at the Roosevelt Park Bowling Club.
