Residents urged to participate in 12 October’s Westdene and Sophiatown clean-up

WESTDENE – Get your gloves and refuse bags out, there is a clean-up campaign coming this weekend.

Residents have been urged to participate in an upcoming clean-up campaign.

The Westdene-Sophiatown Residents Association (WSRA) and Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch (SNW) will be hosting a clean-up of the Westdene Dam and the suburb pavements on 12 October and residents are urged to participate in making the suburb a cleaner and safer place.

Residents can participate in several ways. The first is by taking part in the mass clean-up of Westdene Dam Park. The park is loved by all but, unfortunately, only cared for by a few. The organisers hope that people will come out in their numbers to help keep one of the area’s most scenic features clean. They have also asked that anyone who has a canoe and net, come to the dam on the day so they can rid the dam itself of rubbish that has filled it and its banks.

Those who cannot make it to the dam have been asked to at least spend some time cleaning up their pavements. Residents who live on the same street can join forces to clean up their roads and, at the same time, meet their neighbours. This is a great benefit for community safety and security and to get to know people who could potentially help in emergency situations.

The invitation is also extended to any students and those renting homes as they are also an integral part of the community.

The Westdene-Sophiatown Residents Association and Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch believe that a clean suburb helps promote community pride. They stated that it shows that homeowners care and that people in this suburb do take care of the area and notice what is happening around them.

The association has called on residents to become more involved to keep the suburb clean and assist where they can. The Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch and security companies will ensure visibility patrols on the day to ensure the safety of all and their possessions as they attended to the clean-up.
