Station commander speaks on Brixton police’s crime stats

BRIXTON – Station commander dives into his station latests crime stats.

The Brixton Police Station Commander Colonel Mkhacani Maluleke has shared his views on the stations 2018/2019 crime stats.

Of the stations in the Northcliff Melville Times distribution area, Brixton Police Station had the best results as they recorded decreases in several crimes, including murder, rape, carjackings and robberies at residential and non-residential premises.

This did not come as a surprise for many as the station raked up a few awards in the last year. Maluleke stated, “We are most proud of the awards that the station received last year, one was for the best crime prevention group of the year and the other one for the best performing station of the year in the formal cluster. Our Crime Prevention group also received an award for the 2nd runner up nationally for the Best Crime Prevention Group of the year.”

There was very little room for the station to celebrate as they are already working on improving their numbers, services, community engagement and policing action for the next year. “Our mission is to reduce crime and to get the community and business owners more involved in the fight against crime. We also aim to get all churches and other religions on board and to have more divine interventions projects at the station and in our community.”

Unfortunately, crime did increase in the Brixton Policing Precinct. Crimes such as attempted murder, common robbery and crimes detected by police action worsened. Colonel Maluleke shared some of the stations biggest crime concerns, “Most of the small businesses in the Brixton, Mayfair and Mayfair West areas are operating till the early hours of the morning and that is an open invitation for criminals. These business owners are not trading according to their licences that were issued and are contributing to the crime in the area.”

Colonel Maluleke stated that they will be working tirelessly to ensure that Brixton and surrounding areas are safer for all. “There is room for improvement but we are grateful for the involvement and assistance of the security companies, metro police and all other role-players who are always lending a helping hand.”
