City of Joburg’s Department of Housing embarks on a policy public participation drive
JOHANNESBURG – The City of Joburg urges the public to attend public meetings and participate in policy implementations.
The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Housing has kicked off its two-month drive consulting with communities on three draft policies: the housing allocation policy, serviced sites policy, and the temporary emergency accommodation policy.
The three policies seek to guide the department and provide clear processes in how the department proposes to allocate beneficiaries to RDP houses, how it proposes to implement the new directive of giving people serviced sites to build their own homes, and how to better deal with the very challenging aspect of providing temporary emergency accommodation to those in need.
The ever-growing housing need and increased demand for a permanent solution have resulted in a strong need to identify a diversified way to speed up delivery. The City believes it can address this by providing serviced sites where people can build. However, the manner in which these units are allocated to qualifying beneficiaries is paramount.
The draft policies will ensure greater transparency during the allocation process, denying criminals the opportunity of queue jumping, fraud and corruption.
The City encourages members of the public to come in their numbers and make their voices heard at these meetings as they did at the first two meetings in Region D.
The schedule for the remainder of the meetings is as follows:
- Region E – Wednesday, 11 September from 10am to 2pm at Marlboro Community Hall.
- Region F – Thursday, 12 September from 9am to 1pm at Johannesburg City Hall.
- Region A – Wednesday, 2 October from 9am to 1pm at Rabie Ridge Community Centre.
- Region C – Tuesday, 8 October from 9am to 1pm at Roodepoort City Hall.
