No word yet on cause of police flat fire
SOPHIATOWN – The cause of the fire at the police flats is still unknown to authorities.
Emergency services have confirmed that no injuries or deaths occurred after police flats fire.
While many continue to critique the living conditions of the Sophiatown police flats after a fire broke out on 6 July, there was a positive to take from the incident. Sophiatown Police Station spokesperson, Captain TJ de Bruyn, stated that no fatalities were recorded due to the fire. De Bruyn said, “There was a fire at the Herdershof police married quarters. There were no injuries or deaths reported.”
City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), who responded to the fire, shared details of the blaze that destroyed at least one apartment. Nana Radebe of EMS said, “The fire moved through the lift shaft to the eighth floor but fortunately did not damage any flats. Two fire engines were on scene and no injuries were reported.”
Radebe stated that the cause of the fire is still unknown. “Preliminary investigations conducted by fire safety officers could not establish the cause of fire because of the extent of damage where the fire started.”
De Bruyn added that the police are also assessing the damage done to the building and affected apartments.
