Orban School headed to the finals of KykNETs choir competition

WESTDENE – The learners that have the voices of angels.

Orban School wins a place in the final of kykNET’s prestigious choir competition.

The school’s grade 4–7 learners competed in the senior choir section, singing against choirs from schools across Johannesburg and won over the hearts of the judges of kykNET’s Sing In Harmonie competition on 29 May, when they secured a spot in the final.

Orban’s principal Liz van Tonder shared the school’s excitement.

She said, “We are absolutely delighted that our wonderful choir’s singing was so well-received by the judges. I couldn’t be prouder of our girls and boys for their stellar performance.”

The choir performed two songs, the spiritual Look up Child by Lauren Daigle, and Dit Reen, translated from the original French song Il Pleut by the choir conductor, Louine van der Vyver. The choir was accompanied by Orban music teacher Ana Silent on piano, with the Grade 7 learners playing percussion instruments emulating rain sounds during Dit Reen, while the entire choir accompanied Look Up Child using body percussion choreographed by Michele Zulch, who is also the dialogue coach for the choir.

The judges viewed Orban School’s performance as overwhelmingly positive. The choir was complimented on their natural and relaxed singing, and warm, harmonious unity. The main adjudicator specifically mentioned a unique sound. Judges said they were impressed by the precise synchronicity of the actions, the precision of the rhythm and body percussion and that it was visually pleasing.

The Sing in Harmonie choir competition is currently the biggest school choir competition in South Africa that gives schools the chance to appear on national television and win a share of R50 000 in prizes, including a 10-track CD recording and R5 000 in cash for the winning school.

The final stage of the competition will take place later in the year. Orban School will be one of the final schools performing at Gold Reef City. The final will be broadcasted live on the TV channel. The school hopes all learners, parents, friends, and family, and the public will tune in to support them.
