Fairland illegal dumping issues to be addressed

FAIRLAND – Ward 98 councillor Beverley Weweje and City officials visited a problem area in Fairland.

Ward 98 councillor Beverley Weweje and City officials took an afternoon to assess the extent of a problem area of open land between Johannes and Still Streets.

The open veld area, which is near an old graveyard, has been plagued with issues of illegal dumping and poor maintenance for a number of years.

Weweje said, “We have had numerous complaints from residents and it is an ongoing problem regarding the issue of the illegal dumping of rubble and grass cutting and something serious needs to be done to address this problem.”

The councillor was joined by City of Johannesburg MMC for Community Development Nonhlanhla Sifumba.

“The MMC joined us today to represent City Parks, and even though it is the Johannesburg Roads Agency’s responsibly, City Parks has agreed to assist us in maintaining this area, and this should be completed by the end of this week,” said Weweje.

During the visit, the councillor and City officials were shocked to see an incident of illegal dumping happening before their eyes.

Weweje said, “We witnessed a small truck dumping its load of rubble in the open area. They did not know we were there, and when they saw us, they tried to make a quick getaway.

“We managed to get the information on the company and the driver, and have sent this information to the Metro police to investigate, and I have requested that they remove their rubble on top of fines that need to be issued.”
