Northcliff Country Club is inviting anyone interested to try out the sport of squash

NORTHCLIFF – Social days and fun tournaments are perfect for trying your hand at the sport of squash.

Squash has been played at the club for 30 years, and Northcliff has seen its highs and lows in the Central Gauteng Squash leagues during this time.

The club currently has two men’s, two women’s and one mixed master’s team competing in the leagues.

Fun tournaments are held about three times per year and club championships are held annually. “We have good relations with other clubs and often attend their events as well,” said chairperson of squash at the club, Paul Goldhawk.

He added that social squash is played on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4.30pm. Anyone is welcome to come to give it a go. “You do not have to be a member although we would encourage you to eventually become one. There are lots of benefits for members of Northcliff Country Club.”

These include access to the club’s other facilities (tennis and bowls) and discounts on venue hire. Goldhawk described squash as a sport that requires physical exertion with the motive to win. “It is competitive fitness. It is also fun and you can play with any weather and at any time as opposed to tennis because it is indoors.”

The four squash courts are well-maintained. There is a bar in the same building and a balcony looking over the club is the venue for weekly braais.

“Anyone can play squash,” Goldhawk continued.

“The earlier you start the better you will get but we have people who have never played before or who haven’t played in decades and they only take a few weeks to get good. Older people can also play, we have had people in their 70s at the club before.”

Goldhawk added that squash is a great family sport but for those who do not want to play, the club also has Wi-Fi to keep them entertained.

Northcliff High School and Cliffview Primary School also use the club for their practices and matches.
