Tips on what you should do when you witness a crime

RANDBURG – The next time you witness a crime here is a list of things you need to do.


There seems to be viral footage released every day of the week, a crime captured on camera and many people questioning on social media why are people not helping the victim?

There was an incident reported on the Randburg Sun,  A robbery on Malibongwe Drive caught on camera in peak hour traffic week ending 1 March, where assailants were caught getting away with nobody assisting the victim during the crime.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Superintendent Wayne Minnaar gave our readers some tips on what you should do when you witness a crime:

  • Call the police, either the South African Police Service (SAPS) number on 10111 or Metro police number on 011 375 5911, keep these numbers always as your contacts
  • Capture the footage if you can but it does not help to assist as this can get you attacked or killed
  • Never drive with items that can be seen, such as your cell phone, handbag, laptops, all these items need to be in the boot of the car.
  • Observe, take as much information as you can, the description of the assailants to what they are wearing so you can assist in the investigation
  • Go to the nearest police station after the incident to report it.

We also spoke to police authorities of the Randburg and Northcliff areas, spokesperson for the Randburg Police Station, Captain Makgowanyana Maja said do not try and be a hero, “Try to save a life by being observant, phoning the police should be the first thing you do so that they can arrive as soon as possible.”

Constable Michael Kgatla, spokesperson for the Fairland Police Station, added when you phone the police first explain what is happening, where exactly and assist the victim afterwards.

Contrary to what people think, assisting someone during a crime is dangerous and police have advised that people should follow the above tips to help those in a bad situation.
