Police to exchange vital safety and security information with UJ students

AUCKLAND PARK – Joint campaign between the police and UJ aims to exchange vital crime-avoiding tips with students.

AUCKLAND PARK – Police and the university have joined hands to raise awareness around student safety and security.

It’s no secret that the students of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) are targeted by criminals as they make their way to and from school. Due to this, Brixton Police Station and UJ’s Protection Services are constantly engaging with students on how to stay safe and sound. They have joined forces yet again on 1 March 2019 to launch a campaign that focuses on what students can do to keep themselves safe at all times.

Spokesperson for the station, Jeanette Backoff, shared the details of the campaign. “On 1 March 2019 UJ students, UJ Protection Services, Brixton police, Metro Police and other role players will have a crime awareness with the theme ‘don’t be taken for a ride’ to highlight all the crimes that students fall as a victim of crime.”

She also stated that these campaigns are hosted in partnership with these role players as they believe students perform better in safe environments. “Working towards your future is something that Brixton police values and we want to ensure that you are safe while doing so but we need to work together in achieving that goal.

“With your assistance, we can make a positive difference and a safe environment for all who reside and study in the Brixton policing precinct.”

She also provided general tips that students can use to maximize their safety while on and off campus:

  • There’s safety in numbers, always walk in groups when going to campus or leaving campus.
  • Avoid walking around in public with large sums of money on you.
  • Do not walk in the street displaying cell phones, laptops and earphones, these attract criminals to you.
  • Arrive early for class and exams to allow time to have your valuables locked away in a locker.

Backoff concluded by saying, “Students must be vigilant at all times and remember safety comes first. With your assistance together we can make a positive difference in this specific crime.”
