WESTDENE – The day gave a chance to learners to hear a story in a different language and learn the importance of literacy from a young age.

WESTDENE – Orban Primary School held a read aloud day on 1 February at their school where the Grade 4 to 7 learners read a story to the younger learners at the school.

Grade 7 English teacher and Head of department English at Orban Primary School Barbara Scholtz said, “Today is all about participating in World Read Aloud Day that’s organised by the Nali’bali organisation, it is their aim to reach 1.5 million children that will be read aloud to on this day.

Senior learners at Orban Primary School read to the younger learners on 1 February.

“They have printed their reading story in all our national languages and so the children have the opportunity to hear it in their mother tongue and also in another language.”

Learners listen attentively to teacher Dudu Valakazi who reads to them in IsiZulu.

The Nal’ibali organisation, which translates to ‘here is the story’ in isiXhosa, has a national reading for enjoyment campaign to help children’s potential through storytelling and reading. Nal’ibali is built around the concept that a good culture of reading can be a revolutionary new way for education in South Africa. The campaign helps by valuing the power of language and cultural relevance in literacy development.
