Wits University reviews footage to identify students

BRAAMFONTEIN – If necessary and applicable, students will face suspension for disrupting classes.

Wits University management assures students that those disrupting classes and university proceedings will be dealt with.

Wits University has come out and assured students and staff that they are in full control of the university following a protest led by the Student Representative Council (SRC).

On 5 February they released a statement detailing the latest in regards to the protest. The statement said, “A group of about 50 students led by some members of the Students Representative Council disrupted the operations of the fees and scholarships office (FASO), the fees office and the student enrollment centre before disrupting six lectures on the east and west campuses. All other university activities continued without incident.”

Wits University is rocked by a student protest right at the start of their academic year. Students are protesting towards the lack of student accommodation and financial exclusion.

The statement went on to say that they are currently identifying students who were involved in the disruption of classes on 4 February through video footage and statements. Once identified, these students could face suspensions as they will be held to account in line with the university’s policies, procedures and rules.

The university deployed private security on campus to try to restore calm on the campus and allow activities to proceed with minimal disturbances. They did state that in the event that classes are disrupted, lecturers and students are requested to stand up and leave the venue, and to return to the venue when it is safe to do so. All staff and students are urged to report any and all such incidents.
