Hard work has once again paid off for athletes at Northwest Christian School.
Nine youngsters from the Northcliff-based school won 15 medals between them, at the South African Christian Schools Sports Association (SACSSA) National Championships.
This was at the DP de Villiers Stadium in Sasolburg on 28 and 29 September and has led to four of the athletes qualifying for the Sub-Youth Inter-Provincial Athletics in Potchefstroom in late November.
Athletics coach Jenny Renwick recalled how last year the same group of athletes shone at these competitions.
“I am super proud of everyone,” she said. “We got a lot of personal bests, which is most important for us. Every year we are improving. The future Usain Bolts are here.”
Renwick said the four athletes going to inter-provincials will be aiming for more personal bests, and any medals would be a bonus.
Oluchi Ndubueze, who won two gold and two silver medals at SACSSA, will compete in two of the three following distances in running at inter-provincials: 60m, 80m and 600m.
Teghan Spratt will compete in 600m.
Michael Gyampo won two gold medals at SACSSA and will compete in 200m and 800m.
Madalitso Nasoro won a bronze medal at SACSSA and will compete in 200m at inter-provincials.
Renwick and the school sports coordinator, Gary McNab, agreed that the athletes have shown tremendous dedication in their training, which is why they have done so well.
“Some have private coaches who train them but they still ask us at Northwest to help them even more,” said McNab. “Even at meetings they are always early and warm-up well. Even though they are so young, they are so committed.”
