The City of Johannesburg is once again in full swing celebrating National Transport Month this October.
Under the theme of partnering for safety, the activities the City’s transport department has planned aim to provide all residents with information to empower them about public transport and road safety.
There will be interactions with commuters, public transport operators and drivers.
MMC for Transport Nonhlanhla Makhuba, said this year will also see a partnership with Metro police at various public transport facilities across the City.
“Transport Month is an important campaign to create an awareness of the vital role that transport plays in our society to improve communities and the economy,” she said.
“Safety is something important and dear to my heart as we continue to see too many pedestrians injured on our roads, bus and mini bus taxi accidents and fatalities due to speeding or drunken driving.”
Transport Month is celebrated throughout the country this month to increase awareness of the various available public transport modes and safety commuters can make use of, instead of only relying on single-passenger trips to work and back.
Among others, the City is hosting a road markings awareness event, a public transport-only challenge across the City, launching Metrobus emergency response driving training, promoting the safety of women in taxis, and a service delivery blitz to attend to all road and bridge maintenance issues.
