South Point reaches an agreement with protesting workers

BRAAMFONTEIN – Peace returns to the buildings of South Point.

South Point and striking security guards finally reach an agreement.

After weeks of industrial action by South Point security guards demanding a range of improved salary packages, the two entities have come to an agreement.

A statement from South Point stated, “South Point and the South African Industrial Commercial and Allied Workers Union (SAICWU) have reached a resolution, with the following key demands successfully negotiated and signed-off between the two parties.”

These included the introduction of company-wide minimum wage, provident fund, extra leave and bonuses to mention a few.

In September the protest saw South Point buildings being vandalised and damaged and the safety and security of South Point tenants, staff and suppliers being compromised.

The private accommodation provider stated that negotiations had broken down and ultimately resulted in the protest action.

They committed themselves to finding a solution that pleased all parties and as of 3 October that became a reality.

A peace settlement was also agreed upon, which means that those who contravene the picketing rules and/or the company’s disciplinary code will not be dismissed, but will be subject to certain conditions going forward.

South Point’s workers returned to their duties on 4 October 2018 and a meeting has been scheduled for 19 October 2018 to discuss the feasibility of insourcing the workers.

South Point is acknowledging that the protest period had been a stressful time for many of South Point’s Braamfontein-based employees, tenants (students, retailers and offices), stakeholders and visitors.

They thank them for their patience and understanding of the matter and are setting up strategies to ensure that this doesn’t happen again.
