Community members have come together to support the firefighters battling out the city’s fires.
In a week characterised by fires in Kya Sands and Johannesburg CBD, three firefighters lost their lives trying to keep the public safe.
As news of the fire spread, so did community efforts to support the firefighters that continuously put their lives on the line to save and help the public.
The communities around Fairlands Police Station were some of those who wanted to make a difference for the firefighters.
Scores of water, juice, energy bars, snacks and other edibles were collected at the station with the aims of sharing them with the fearless firefighters.
After a Facebook post by JHB West Responders, residents took time out of their days and money out of their pockets to help the firefighters of Johannesburg.
Station commander of Fairlands police Colonel Clive de Freitas was extremely pleased with the amount of food and drink parcels that were collected since 5 September.
“People have been coming into the station every hour to drop off plastic bags of goods. It’s good to see that the public recognises the efforts of the firefighters.”
Since they opened their doors to be a collection centre, they have been able to do deliveries every night since the fires erupted.
Fairlands police station continues to encourage the public to bring in any donations they would like to make towards the firefighters.
