Northcliff Country Tennis Club invites people over 60 to play

NORTHCLIFF – Local tennis club says tennis is one of the best sports to play at a late age.

Calling all people over 60 years old who are interested in playing tennis.

The Northcliff Country Tennis Club has tonnes of youngsters on the courts every day, but it could use some experience to balance this out.

Tennis coach Douglas Mumba said he coaches eight players over 60, and five of them compete in leagues.

“Tennis is a sport you can take up at any age, whether very young or in your 90s,” he said, adding that for the older beginners he always assesses what aches they might have in their muscles and bones, and how they can gradually overcome them.

“Tennis is one of the best sports for people in their late age because it is not hard on the body and is a good way to keep fit and keep the mind and body active.”

According to Mumba, everyone should warm up before playing tennis, but senior players need to warm up a little longer.
Beginners also need to have realistic expectations, and perhaps only play for half an hour for the first few times.

Mumba also ensures beginners start playing about close to the net and play from the baseline only when fit enough, so as not to cause injury.

The club sees the seniors play twice every week, with the experienced players playing for up to an hour at a time.

“Tennis is also great at a late age because you meet new people and make friends.”

Mumba encouraged any seniors interested in joining the club or trying tennis out, to contact him.
