Kindness Like Confetti do their part for Mandela Day
NORTHCLIFF – Boxes full of sandwiches ready to feed those that need it most.
Kindness Like Confetti hit the ground running on Mandela Day after making over 1 500 sandwiches for schoolchildren.
Kindness Like Confetti tasked themselves with providing every youngster at the Yeoville Community School with a sandwich in the spirit of Mandela Day.
Alyson Samson, founder of the non-profit organisation, stated that they initially planned to make 967 sandwiches to give to the children.
By 9.30am they had already surpassed their target after making over 1 500 sandwiches. This allowed them to give every child at the school two sandwiches each.
Samson explained why they chose the children from Yeoville to receive their sandwiches.
“There is extreme poverty and hunger in this community of people and statistics show 95% of the parents of children attending Yeoville Community School, are unemployed.
These are the children of Johannesburg’s waste-pickers, car guards and beggars at our traffic lights; the children of the thousands of migrant families who have fled to South Africa in the hope of a better life, from as far as Ethiopia, Tanzania, Nigeria, Congo and even larger numbers of Zimbabweans and Mozambicans.”
She shared this with members of the community and donations of sliced bread, sandwich spreads, sandwich bags and boxes started pouring in.
Since 7.30am they were making sandwiches for the less-fortunate youngsters. Samson added that people have also donated fruit.
“Apart from the sandwiches, we will also be giving every learner an orange or apple.”
Samson would like to thank everyone who supported this initiative and urges them all to continue with the spirit of giving.
