Unbeatable UJ team wins soccer tournament

AUCKLAND PARK – He said their success was due to discipline on and off the field, team unity and believing in their ability.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) women’s soccer team won the University Sports South Africa football tournament.

The women in orange achieved this in spectacular fashion by remaining unbeaten in the competition at Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth. UJ won on penalties in a nail nail-biting final against Tshwane University of Technology.

UJ coach Jabulile Baloyi said, “We went into the week with a strong desire to do better than 2017 when we were the hosts. “Everything went according to plan as we went from finishing fourth last year to winning the title this year.”

He said their success was due to discipline on and off the field, team unity and believing in their ability.

“We had a different approach for every match and adopted the approach of taking it one game at a time.”

There were some standout performances from striker Amanda Mthandi and goalkeeper Dineo Magagula.

Mthandi won the top goal scorer of the tournament after scoring nine goals and was named the player of the tournament. Magagula was named goalkeeper of the tournament.

Baloyi applauded every player and the team’s management for the work ethic they put into becoming the champions.
