SOPHIA TOWN – Drug bust sees 50 bags of marijuana confiscated.

Success for the Crime Prevention Unit as they arrest suspected drug dealer found with 50 bags of marijuana.

On the morning of 20 June, the Crime Prevention Unit of Sophia Town Police Station arrested and charged an individual for being in possession of marijuana. The unit received a tip-off about a drug deal happening in an informal settlement near the station.

Sophia Town police spokesperson Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn said, “Members of the unit raided the house and arrested the suspect and confiscated 50 bags of dagga. The suspect is detained at Sophia Town Police Station for dealing in drugs.”

This unit has been successful since its inception at the beginning of the year. De Bruyn stated, “Since the unit was formed at the beginning of the year they had numerous successes regarding dealing in drugs and the possession of drugs. This also includes arrests for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and robbery.”

The unit tends to work in civilian clothing in order to blend in with the rest of the community. Their main priority is to tackle serious crimes in the area such as drug dealing and violent robberies.

Sophia Town police calls on the public to assist them to make the area crime-free. In order for the unit to continue its success, they ask communities members to contact the police if they have any crime related information.
