John Orr RCL aims to make schooling environment exciting

MILPARK – The Representative Council of Learners has commenced with its exciting plans for the year.

John Orr Technical High School recently elected its Representative Council of Learners (RCL) for 2018.

RCL public relations officer, Melisa Thamae said 13 learners were selected to represent the council from grades 10 to 12 after going through a voting system. They are responsible for representing the learners, engaging with them about their concerns and ensuring they follow the school’s code of conduct.

RCL president Kutlwano Ditsele and public relations officer Melisa Thamae are passionate about their new roles.

“We meet three times a week, depending on what we are working on at a particular time. Learners are always welcome to approach us whenever they need to, however, we also have RCL class representatives in all grades who communicate with us about their queries,” said Thamae.

Since taking on their roles, the council has been hard at work making sure learners can look forward to what takes place at their school. RCL president, Kutlwano Ditsele said the concerns of learners vary and they try to accommodate learners’ suggestions provided they don’t violate any rules.

John Orr Technical High School’s Representative Council of Learners work together as a team to address learners’ concerns.

“Learners have approached us about having more events and extramural activities. So far we’ve hosted a Valentine’s Day event, we are currently planning a Mr and Miss John Orr event on 27 April and a Heritage Day function. Our goal is to make these events bigger and better than previous events, in a safe environment,” said Thamae.

Ditsele added that one of his aims for the year ahead is to encourage learners to integrate and get to know each other, in order to offer each other assistance. This will create a sense of unity and teamwork among learners.

“We hope to leave behind a legacy which other learners will aspire to achieve,” he said.
