Help make a difference by donating a blanket to the less fortunate

NEWLANDS – A fundraising initiative hopes to raise 2 000 blankets for the less fortunate, in preparation for winter.

A family took it upon themselves to raise funds for the less fortunate through a blanket drive.

Newlands resident, Vicky van Niekerk established the drive with her husband, David. Vicky said their goal is to raise 2 000 blankets and tin food in preparation for the winter season.

Vicky has been involved in fundraisers at her church.

“We were initially thinking of an idea to help the poor helpless people during the winter time; we feel so sorry for people living on the street and who don’t have enough food to survive on, so we decided to start with a blanket drive and raising 2 000 tins of food before winter – but the more that’s donated, the merrier,” she said.

The drive, which has been running since January, is in need of more sponsorship from the community and businesses.

Vicky added that the drive has been promoted via social media in order to spread the word about this great cause and welcomes people to contact them for further information.

Since the fundraiser was established, the drive hasn’t reached their expected numbers but she is optimistic about reaching her goal.

“My goal is to give the less fortunate a boost in life and show them that there are people out there who care for them. We welcome any kind of blankets which are in good condition and can also directly pick them up from people,” said Vicky.
