One King David Victory Park High School learner loves a good debate and is so good at it, he made it to the national debate team.
Gabriel Brouard-Ancer, in Grade 11, was chosen to represent South Africa during the World Schools Debating Championships which will be held in Croatia in July this year.
“This is the very highest honour that a secondary school debater can achieve in South Africa,” King David marketing manager, Nirvana Rodgers, said. She explained that Gabriel is now one of the top five debaters in the entire country.
The Grade 11 youngster was selected for the World Trials Squad after a fine debate at the South African National Debating Championships in December last year when he represented Gauteng.
Gabriel has participated in a rigorous programme of squad practices since the beginning of January. During the programme, he has also had to go through large files of research on the most obscure of possible debate topics to prepare.
“To get to this level, debaters have to be extraordinarily committed and willing to sacrifice other aspects of their lives,” Rodgers said.
She said the school has been told by those in the debating world that Gabriel performed superbly at the trials and that the selectors were all extremely impressed with him.
Shortly after, he was selected for the national team.
Rodgers said that Gabriel has consistently represented King David with dignity and skill since Grade 8.
“The school is enormously proud of him and wish him much happiness and fulfilment as he and his fellow team members prepare for worlds.”
