The Linden police have a zero-corruption tolerance policy for police officers participating in illegal activities.
Station commander, Colonel Ahmed Musthan said any corruption allegation that’s brought against a police officer is fully investigated. However, there is a procedure the complainant needs to follow.
Complainants will need to submit a sworn affidavit due to the severity of the allegation. According to the South African Constitution, a person is deemed innocent until proven guilty.
“The complainant cannot be considered anonymous when completing an affidavit, however, they may only remain anonymous when they provide the police with information to assist with an investigation. We make a clear distinction between convicting a police officer for corruption and removing them from the police. I don’t want corrupt policemen,” said Musthan.
When making reference to the community, he added there are a number of people who have a great deal of confidence in the management of the police but, unfortunately, when one police officer does something wrong, they blame all the policemen, which he’s willing to accept.
However, if you provide him with a sworn affidavit informing him a police officer has done something wrong, he will charge them and will provide feedback on the case.
“There have been many instances where people have stood up and given us statements. I’m investigating those policemen. There is no such thing as police officers here not facing consequences. What is documented on social media and media houses, is incorrect.”
Musthan highlights he doesn’t deny the fact that there are corrupt policemen and is committed to investigating those incidents with the assistance of the community who is instrumental in identifying corrupt activities.
The dedicated station commander continues to have an open-door policy and assures people not to worry about their well-being. He encourages residents to contact the police station and crime stop.
