There have been reports that a number of students from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) are sleeping in toilets, corridors, lecture halls and laboratories.
However, the university has denied these allegations saying these claims were not factual.
The university’s media liaison Herman Esterhuizen said, “The University is actively investigating these claims made by students and other media houses.
“Students officially applied in 2017, those who met the academic requirements and were accepted for accommodation are still in the process of being allocated [rooms].”
Esterhuizen said some students currently have access to the residences but are still going through the process of being formally placed in their rooms.
“So far we have not been approached about students having to squat on campus,” he added.
Campus security have also not reported any squatting on campus and the university says they are yet to be approached by students about the claims.
“We are investigating and an official statement will be provided on 5 February.”
