On special occasions, the children entertain residents at the German Old Age Home.

The secondary school year project was established in 1989, which empowers schools from different areas.

“We have a network of 12 schools in Soweto which DSJ has partnered with and built relationships with principals from particular streams.

“The schools pick their best Grade 3 and 4 learners who attend class every Saturday and are provided with food and transport. They get taught maths and English, for four hours at a time.

They write an exam in Grade 4, and if they qualify they can join DSJ in Grade 5. However we don’t provide scholarships,” said Ceprinch.

Marketing manager Annette Holtman added that every year in August, the German government sponsors a sports day where all the boys play soccer and the girls from the combined schools play netball.

Once a year DSJ Grade 4s play soccer at one of their partner schools, Thabisile Secondary School.

“In 2016 we co-hosted the first-ever Science Week with DSJ in Pretoria over a two-week period.

There were various biological and scientific studies done and learners were tagged with different partners giving them an opportunity to interact with each other,” said Holtman.

The school has a number of fundraisers which take place throughout the year, such as fashion shows and the annual Shulbasar festival.

Funds raised are used to for the general infrastructure for the school, their various development initiatives and to provide schoolchildren with educational necessities.
