Shots fired over private taxi-fare

WESTDENE – A drive home turned ugly after a private taxi-fare dispute.

A commuter was arrested after firing two shots during a dispute over his fare, after being driven home by a private taxi service.

The exact date of the incident is unclear, however, reports indicate that it took place between 2 or 3 December on Banbury Road, Westdene.

Spokesperson for the Sophiatown Police Station, Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn said police officers were alerted to a shooting in the area and upon arrival found a community patrol group on the scene.

“Apparently the driver took the customer home and once they reached the location, an argument broke out about payment,” De Bruyn said.

He explained that the passenger pulled out a firearm and fired two shots. It is unclear whether he did so inside or outside the vehicle.

De Bruyn further indicated that the two had a tussle over the firearm as the driver tried to disarm the disgruntled commuter.

Later, while outside the vehicle, the commuter allegedly fell and hit his head on the sidewalk, which the driver used as an opportunity to kick the firearm away from him.

De Bruyn confirmed that the passenger was arrested and will likely face charges of attempted murder.

While the commuter sustained an injury, the driver escaped unharmed.

Northcliff Melville Times is in the process of establishing which paid transport service the victim belonged to as well as the extent of the passenger’s injuries.
