Westdene Dam will remain closed for the next while

WESTDENE – Ward 69 councillor said construction is hindering the Westdene Dam opening.

With summer finally falling in Joburg, residents are eager to be outdoors but a local summer favourite might not open for a while.

The award-winning Westdene Dam which closed on 2 May will be closed until further notice.

Ward 69 councillor, Genevieve Sherman told Northcliff Melville Times that the dam has been under construction and is also being used as a construction site for City of Johannesburg’s Corridors of Freedom project.

While the construction board on the outside of the dam stated that the dam will open on 19 October, Sherman said it may take longer as construction can sometimes be unpredictable.

Various posts have since been making the rounds on social media about the opening which residents believe will be on 19 November. Although residents have been inquiring and posting about the opening of the dam, Sherman said no official date has been set as yet.

“[On 19 October] residents were told by City Parks that the dam will open in a month’s time which would make it 19 November. I do not, however, see this being possible as the dam is being used as a construction site. No official date has been set yet,” Sherman confirmed.

She assured residents that she would communicate the opening date once it becomes known.
