De La Salle College believes in long-term community work

MELVILLE – 'It has made such a difference to our aftercare schedule,' – Sparrow Foundation School.

Doing superficial community work is just not De La Salle Holy Cross College’s style, so they aptly gave a Melville school’s ‘roots to grow and wings to fly’.

As part of the college’s Grade 7 community service, some of their children took on a project at the Sparrow Foundation School in Melville whose motto is, ‘roots to grow and wings to fly’. The school’s motto certainly rubbed off on De La Salle who took a long-term approach to their community work at the school.

The project started earlier this year when their Grade 7 group started assisting in the Sparrow aftercare class. They helped with homework, reading, sports and even brought snacks along for their new found friends.

After visiting a few times, the group decided they would like to leave behind more than just memories – they wanted to leave something tangible behind. During De La Salle’s recent school holidays, their Grade 7s worked tirelessly to create a special activity corner to surprise Sparrow children when they returned to school.

The Grade 7s sourced books, educational toys, games, a new carpet and beanbags for the activity corner. A final clean and handmade posters were later put up to complete the corner.

Sparrow Foundation School principal, Leona Krishna, thanked De La Salle’s Grade 7s once their special corner was revealed.

“It has made such a difference to our aftercare schedule and the Sparrow children are thoroughly enjoying settling down comfortably in the afternoon to a good read,” Krishna said happily.
