RAPULANE MONAGENG: I was already on standby for emergency services. We were mostly concerned about informal settlements and falling trees causing roads to be gridlocked.
On 9 October, a massive storm hit Joburg, leaving a path of destruction and flooding in its wake. There have even been reports of a tornado tearing Cradlestone Mall’s roof apart and many complexes were heavily damaged.
NOMAGUGU SHONGWE: I think the storm was really intense. The rain was too heavy at home, but I am very happy that it did not damage anything.
KAGISO LETSWAMOTSE: Luckily I was in the office. But the wind was so strong that we had to shut down the warehouse. The trip back home was a nightmare.
CHARLEEN DAMA: I was lucky to get home at about 3pm just before the storm hit. The wind was unbelievable, it was really scary. Thankfully our complex was not damaged.
GENEVEVE CHRISTOPHER: It affected traffic and there were huge accidents. One has a sense of fear and disempowerment because you know you can’t control the weather.
