Newborn baby found dead in Brixton Cemetery by passerby

VREDEDORP – 'We suspect that the baby was dumped last night' – Brixton Police Station.

A newborn baby was found dead in Brixton Cemetery, Vrededorp, in the early hours of the morning on 25 September by John Sangani, a passerby.

“I was walking and a saw a black bag. I thought someone was hiding something in it so I went to see and found the baby,” Sangani said.

He alerted Alert Security and Armed Response Services personnel who then contacted Brixton Police Station.

According to the forensic team, which arrived on the scene shortly after police were contacted, the body of the newborn was covered in a white membrane and blood.

Jeanette Backhoff, spokesperson for Brixton Police Station, said a search is currently underway for the mother of the newborn, with officers conducting interviews with local community members.

“We suspect that the baby was dumped last night but we will know as soon as a full report from forensics is received,” Backhoff said.
