A resident was attacked and robbed during an armed robbery at her home in Westdene in the early evening of 4 September.
The woman was home alone at the time of the incident.
Warrant officer TJ de Bruyn said the victim was talking to her husband on the phone inside the house when a man approached her from behind and grabbed her. The intruder then proceeded to pack valuables from around the house into bags.
“The suspect packed two bags with jewellery, took a laptop and an iPad. Her husband arrived home while the suspect was still there. The suspect subsequently ran away. At this stage it’s still unknown how the man gained entry into the home,” said De Bruyn.
He encouraged residents to be vigilant at all times by keeping doors closed, making sure all windows are closed when people go to sleep and before entering their residences, they need to make sure they are not being followed.
“Before you go into the premises, look out for suspicious situations or people which you didn’t notice before. Criminals normally watch victims for some time. Residents must be alert at all times and contact the police when they notice suspicious activities.”
Meanwhile, chairperson of the Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch, Dauw Steyn said ER24 paramedics were on the scene to treat the victim, who he claims was assaulted and dragged by her hair. She was then thrown against a dressing table and cable-tied.
“The suspect also left a bag he had packed behind, when he left the premises,” said Steyn.
A case of house robbery has been opened at the Sophiatown Police Station. No arrests have been made.
