Members of Sophiatown Police Station arrested two suspects with unlicensed firearms in two different cases, in Westbury and Newlands.
Warrant officer TJ de Bruyn said during the first incident, two members from the station were doing their routine patrols in Westbury on 1 September. At 9.30pm, the officers came across a suspicious-looking vehicle in the area. In an attempt to stop the vehicle, a male occupant jumped out of the vehicle and ran away.
“The police chased the suspect on foot, managed to catch him and found an unlicensed firearm as well as ammunition. The suspect was arrested and detained for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said De Bruyn.
He said in another incident which took place on 2 September, a Sophiatown police officer was patrolling in Newlands at 00.45pm when he noticed two suspicious-looking suspects walking in the street. When they were approached by the officers, they ran away.
“The police chased one suspect that had an object wrapped in black plastic in his hands. The suspect dropped the object, was caught and the police discovered an unlicensed shotgun with five rounds. The suspect was arrested and detained for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.”
