Another great clean-up for Alberts Farm

JOBURG – The Friends of Alberts Farm host another clean-up in the park.

The Friends of Alberts Farm held a successful Wetland and Grassland litter clean-up on 22 and 23 July.

Chairperson Julie Gouws said about 40 volunteers diligently and meticulously cleaned out three specific sections of the park on Saturday.

“On Sunday morning, we moved to the rocky ridge grasslands where we have an enormous problem caused by religious worshippers.

“Part of their ceremonies is to smash glass bottles onto the rocks. There must have been thousands of broken bottles littering the rocks,” Gouws said.

When volunteers Colleen Rood and Aiden Roberts were cleaning away sharp broken shards of glass, a little lizard slithered out from behind the rocks to claim a newly cleaned spot.

“We were joined this weekend by the 1st Greenside Scout Troop – their energy and effort were very much appreciated. We were also very grateful to have the Greymont Team from Lew Geffen Randburg as well as DA Ward 86 [members] participate.”

Pikitup offered to clear away the 120 bags of litter the group collected over the weekend.

“These events are not possible without the generosity and support of the community.”

The next event, Great Winter Tidy Up, will take place on 5 August from 9am until 12pm starting at the main car park in 6th Road West. If community members would like to participate, contact the Alberts Farm Conservancy Facebook page or call 079 898 2845.

“In terms of wildlife, we found evidence of scrub hares, caught glimpses of the mongoose and the birds of prey were very active – making us realise the value of our clean up efforts even more.”

Keep an eye out for more clean-ups on the Friends of Alberts Farm Conservancy Facebook page.
