Full-time masters student at UJ in Auckland Park turns Mrs Africa finalist

Student by day, hero at the same time

Diana Robertson-Tsotetsi is a full-time masters student at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), wife, community engagement volunteer at UJ, mentor and now a Mrs Africa finalist.

As part of the UJ’s Community Engagement Unit which focuses on sustainable development in socio-economic spaces, Robertson-Tsotetsi has worked on various projects in and around Johannesburg.

She recently worked as the co-ordinating officer at UJ’s Kingsway campus during its Mandela Day initiative. Her role was to facilitate the running of the unit’s health initiative, where organisations such as Pink Drive conducted free breast examinations and provided information about breast cancer.

“There is power in unity and you can feel it when we work together on various projects,” said Robertson-Tsotetsi.

She is onto bigger things as she plans to win the Mrs Africa pageant.

“Now I have a bigger mandate and am on a new quest as a Mrs Africa finalist to take my contributions to the community on a higher level.”

Her core focus as a finalist will be to raise funds to supply young girls with washable sanitary wear. “Restoring our girls’ dignity is primarily what I advocate for.” Robertson-Tsotetsi will also host educational workshops around feminine health, hygiene and reproduction. She plans to assist and educate more than 150 girls through this initiative.

Returning to her studies as a masters student, her field of specialisation is on assessment and technology in education. It was during her studies that she decided to partner with UJ’s Community Engagement Unit.

Whenever Robertson-Tsotetsi is not studying, she is creating mentorship programmes for young girls. Her work reaches outside of the university as well, with some of her projects reaching as far as Eldorado park.

“I firmly believe that if woman use their gift of talking to inspire others and uplifting each other, incredible things can happen.”
