Westdene Dam closed until further notice

WESTDENE – The Westdene Dam is closed as it is being used as a construction site for the Corridors of Freedom project.

Westdene Dam Park regulars will have to look elsewhere to have long walks, play on jungle gyms and work out in the outdoor gym until further notice.

The dam has been temporarily closed and according to a sign put up at the park’s entrance it was closed on 2 May and will reopen on 19 October with the opening date subject to change without prior notice.

Westdene little ones will have to find another park with jungle gyms and slides to play on.

The Northcliff Melville Times approached the area’s ward councillor, Genevive Sherman, about the reason behind the closure. She said the dam had been closed due to the land being used as a construction site for the Corridors of Freedom project.

The project seeks to demolish apartheid spatial planning by beautifying the City of Johannesburg as well as making mobility in the city safe, convenient and affordable.

The Westdene Dam Park will be closed until further notice due to construction activities.

Sherman added that construction around the dam itself was also on the cards and plans for this have yet to be announced. The park was recently awarded a Sali gold award for Specialised Landscape Design as well as a Sali silver award for Environmental and Water Wise Landscaping.

She added that giving a reopening date for the dam was tricky because of unpredictable construction times but assured that she would communicate it once it became clear.
