Diarise this Sof’town jazz performance

SOPHIATOWN – Tune Recreation Committee will be serenading Sof'town jazz enthusiasts.

The Trevor Huddlestone Centre has been playing a pivotal role in keeping Sophiatown arts and culture alive.

On 30 July, the centre will host the band Tune Recreation Committee (TRC) for the Sophiatown The Mix Jazz Encounters series.

The TRC describes themselves as being ‘the playground for the interrogation, assimilation and extended extemporisation from the canon of South African jazz heritage.’

The band’s front man, Mandla Mlangeni (trumpet), not only plays for TRC but also formed the Amandla Freedom Ensemble that released a highly-acclaimed album last year.

The rest of the band includes Clement Benny (drums), Nicholas Williams (bass) and Keenan Ahrends (guitar). The tour includes special guest Mark Fransman on alto saxophone, flute and accordion.

The show will be the only TRC Johannesburg performance for their winter tour. The evening offers a chance to hear the world-class act play songs from their 2017 album Voices of our Vision. The album was described at the Cape Town Jazz Festival as being soft as a hug as opposed to hitting the ears in an attempt to impress.

Booking is essential as seating is limited at the intimate venue. The audience is also required to bring their own snacks and drinks. The venue will provide ice, glasses and safe parking.

Details: Trevor Huddlestone Centre, 30 July, 5pm to 8pm.
