Auckland Park Academy of Excellence (Apax) celebrated grandparents in a most thoughtful way, when the schools’s Foundation Phase hosted Grandparents Day at Sulian Nana Memorial Hall in Crosby.
The joyous occasion began with grandparents being treated to sketches and songs.
Apax senior administrator, Fazela Amod said that the occasion, which is an annual event, was attended by 275 guests and is in its fourth year. The grandparents look forward to this event which is a highlight on the school’s calendar.
The audience was in stitches as they watched the schoolchildren’s well rehearsed play and also enjoyed Islamic songs called, nasheeds performed by talented grade 9s and 10s. Some of the children were also dressed in amusing props that illustrated their different character roles.
Grandparent, Fozie Alatiff said this was the second time she attended the occasion and this year was better organised than previous years. She added that she enjoyed the sketches performed by the different grades.
Foundation Phase HOD, Aysha Haffejee said that every year they aim to make the event a success.
“We added sketches in order to lengthen the programme because we discovered that the grandparents wanted more. The Grade 1s performed a song, the Grade 2s all had an opportunity to perform in a sketch and the Grade 3s performed in a sketch and a song. This year we incorporated a ticketing system where parents were able to buy their tickets online, which gave us an indication of how many parents would be attending,” said Haffejee, who added that at the end of the event, grandparents were presented with personalised magnets made by their very own grandchildren. The children’s parents provided delicious meals that were served at the end of the occasion.
