Marches this Friday in Joburg

JOBURG – Let us know of any marches we don't know of.

As many South Africans are set to take part in marches organised all over South Africa, we take a look at marches we know of in Joburg.

A gathering of 16 or more people needs to apply for a march with Metro police for it to be legal.

Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the department received only two applications for tomorrow in the City of Johannesburg.

One of them being a march to Mary Fitzgerald Square in the CBD. The other, a prayer session.

The march to the square will start with people meeting on Anderson Street next to Westgate Rea Vaya Station at 10 am.

Minnaar said officers will be deployed to the march to the square and advised motorists to avoid the inner city between 10am and 2pm.

“As for other marches, officers will deal with it as it develops,” he said.

Other marches we know of in Northern Joburg:

  • Residents from surrounding areas will meet on Beyers Naude at 6am on the bridge over the N1 highway.
  • Sofiatown Community Policing Forum is leading a march from Roosevelt Park Substation from 6.30am.
  • A march on Hendrik Potgieter Road is scheduled for around 4pm. Not much more is known about it.

  • Sandton Square Mile March – Meet at McDonald’s on the corner of Grayston and Rivonia roads at 1pm
  • Sunninghill – Gather in Kilindini Park on the corner of Edison Crescent and Kilindini Road at 7.30am
