Rubbish builds up along the Braamfontein Spruit

EMMARENTIA – Residents are angered by the growing amounts of illegal dumping in the area.

Residents are fed up with illegal dumping that occurs repeatedly along the Braamfontein Spruit.

A resident in the area, Mike Browne said Pikitup did not make convenient sites available for legitimate disposal of rubble.

“The sites that are available are far away and they charge a lot for trucks to dump,” he said. He added that the drivers of these trucks would dump wherever they think they could get away with it.

Browne said all the railings along the spruit had either been removed or had decayed. “So it is very easy to drive a truck into the area with no obstacles,” he said.

Ward 88 councillor, Nicholas Lonmer said dumping was a big problem in the area. “It’s important that you first report any sightings of illegal dumping to the Metro police,” said Lonmer, who added that if residents saw people dumping they should, if it was safe to do so, take a photo of the dumping and the vehicle’s licence plate number.

He added that broken-down fences should be reported to City Parks and if action was not taken, to escalate the issue to the ward councillor.

Lomner concluded that the main problem was that people were hiring contractors that were not reputable. “Residents need to ensure that they check up on people they hire,” he advised.
