Stay safe in harsh weather

JOBURG - Tips to keep you safe during the upcoming severe weather conditions like floods, hail and storms.

South Africa has had some very severe weather patterns this past years, but weather forecasters are predicting some more severe weather to come in the upcoming months.

“We urge all South Africans to take precautions to protect their homes and property against bad weather,” said Dialdirect spokesperson. Bianca de Beer. Dialdirect offers the following tips to keep in mind in severe weather.

Hail:

–  When there is a hail forecast try to park your car undercover and delay travelling until the storm has subsided.

– If you are caught in a hail storm look for cover. However, take extreme care when pulling-over. Turn on your hazard lights and don’t risk your safety.

– Don’t park under trees as there is a danger of falling branches.

– If there is no shelter nearby, motorists are urged to pull-over onto the side of the road if it is safe to do so. In an un-sheltered spot, hail damage is inevitable but, it is safer not to drive through a storm when visibility is poor.

– Keep heavy blankets in your car.

Floods:

– Purchase sandbags to be placed against doorways and low level vents. Move high valuable items to a safe spot.

– Clearing debris from gutters will limit damages in times of disaster.

– Turn gas and electricity if flooding occurs.

– Do not attempt to drive in flood conditions. Water just 60cm deep in enough to sweep a vehicle away.

– Avoid crossing bridges or roads next to rivers during heavy rains. If you get stuck on a flooded road, it is best to switch to the lowest gear and proceed slowly.

– If trapped in a vehicle during a flood, rather abandon the vehicle and climb to higher ground.

Severe thunder storms, wind and lighting:

– Make sure dead or rotting branches are removed from trees to avoid the risk of them falling.

– Make sure outdoor furniture is stored inside during a storm.

– The power surge of a lighting strike can easily overload most appliances and devices. Unplug these before the storm arrives.

– If you are driving and visibility is poor or road is slippery, pull over and switch on hazards.

– Avoid taking shelter under trees in case of falling debris.
