GALLERY: Bowls at the next level

LINDEN – Bowls players take their game to the next level by practising specific scenarios.

The Linden Bowling Club was recently crowned the Johannesburg Bowls Association’s club of the year for the 2015/16 season, and already the club is working towards retaining the award next season.

Great facilities, friendly members and a well-organised calendar of events is not the only thing the club boasts. Free bowls lessons, which are open to the public, are held weekly, and skills training classes are hosted by former South African women’s bowler, Esmé Haley, winner of a gold and a bronze medal at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

A series of skills training classes is currently being held at the club which features specific exercises involving difficult scenarios a bowler might encounter in a match. “We teach these exercises so people can take them and practice them in their own time afterwards,” explained club president, Darrel Johnston.

“They include particular shots that will improve a bowler’s game, and if the bowler encounters a scenario like one of these in a match, they will be able to play it with confidence.”

Marten Dempsey has been bowling for almost a year and said, “This game is beautiful, there are so [many] skills and techniques required.”

Sandra Khourie has been bowling for seven years. “The skills training is good because it involves shots you would not normally play – it is great practice,” she said.
