Hit-and-run boy recovers

AUCKLAND PARK – Liam Scheepers remembers the day of his accident.

Liam Scheepers (13), a victim of a hit-and-run is recovering well at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.

His family was happy to say that he is in a much better state and that they are seeing progress every day. The Scheepers family invited the Northcliff Melville Times to come and see Liam at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital. He was fast asleep but he looked peaceful and in a better condition.

Liam’s grandmother, Zelda Scheepers, said that he is talking now and eating on his own. All the pipes that were connected to him are now removed. She added that his memory is back and he remembers everyone in his life, he even remembers the day of the accident and the colour of the car that hit him.

“He asks about his dog all the time, he is a big animal lover,” said Zelda. She said that he also asks about his school results, about his friends and when they are going to come and visit him.

Zelda said that the doctors are not ready to let him go just yet. “First he must learn to sit on a wheelchair, walk on crutches and go to physiotherapy,” she said. She added that he will be staying a couple of weeks more until the doctors are 100 per cent happy with his progress.

Liam has his family by his side throughout the day, rotating from his mother Carleen Scheepers that sleeps overnight, his grandmother that is there with him throughout the day and his family members that come to visit on a daily basis.

Zelda said that the family is still on the lookout for the people responsible of the hit-and-run and the family is still urging anyone with information to come forward.

Liam was bumped by a car that was believed to be drag racing in in Bosmont. Eye witnesses said that it was a white Golf and a green Polo. The suspect hit Liam and drove off leaving him to fight for his life on the side of the road. Sophiatown Police Corporate Communications officer, Lieutenant Colonel Julia Claassen said that the case is still under investigation.
