UPDATE: Liam wakes up

BOSMONT – Liam Scheeper's family and doctors look forward to his recovery.

Liam Scheepers from Bosmont (13) finally woke up after spending weeks in ICU following a hit-and-run accident.

His grandmother, Zelda Scheepers, said that he came out of his coma on last week when he moved around in his bed and opened his eyes. Zelda said that she could tell that he wanted to say something when she gave him a piece of paper and a pencil to write. He wrote, “Really need to pee.” Zelda said that he looked cross.

She was very excited that her grandson has woken up. “He is breathing on his own and only has one pipe in his mouth now,” she said. Zelda said that the family was very relieved and excited that he had woken up. “The doctors are also very happy with his progress,” she said.

His uncle, Darian Scheepers said that the people responsible for the accident are still on the run.

Liam was admitted to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital after he was seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident on Albertina Sisulu Road.

Liam has suffered a number of serious injuries including bleeding on the brain, swelling of his head, a broken pelvic bone, serious damage to his stomach and impact to the chest that made it difficult for him to breathe.

Sophiatown Police Corporate Communications officer, Lieutenant Colonel Julia Claassen said a case of reckless and negligent driving is still being investigated.
