Two suspects arrested after business robbery

NORTHCLIFF – Arrested suspect had previously served 15 years in jail for robbery.

Two out of four suspects were arrested in connection with a robbery in Fairland.

Three men and one woman entered a restaurant on 14th Avenue in Northcliff, 28 June just after 10pm. While the workers were closing up, they robbed them of money and a cellphone. The workers managed to push the panic button and Beagle Watch Armed Response arrived at the scene shortly after that.

Two of the male robbers ran to a vehicle and drove away. One man and one woman suspect were left behind and they attempted to run away on foot. Beagle Watch Security gave chase. Beagle Watch’s customer relations officer, Anne Wood said that the suspects fired three shots at the security guards in pursuit. “Our security guards did not return fire but they managed to catch the suspects,” said Wood.

The two suspects who were caught are in their thirties, they were taken back to the restaurant where they were then arrested by the Fairland Police. A stolen cash box containing R3 000 and a phone was found on the suspects. According to Wood, the male suspect that was arrested was profiled and was found to have previously served 15 years in jail for robbery.

Fairland Police Station Commander Captain Kgaogelo Moyo said that the suspects that got away in the vehicle got away with a cash box containing R35 000. “When the two suspects on foot were caught, the woman confessed to where they had stashed the cash box,” said Captain Moyo. He said the suspects could not provide details of the whereabouts of the other two suspects.

Capt Moyo confirmed that the case is still under investigation. The suspects will appear at the Newlands Magistrates’ Court on 1 July on the charges of business robbery. Trauma counselling was provided for the workers and fortunately, none of them were harmed.
