Millionaires Club exceeds fundraising goals

FAIRLANDS – Radford House School donates one million cents to the Starfish Foundation.

Radford House School donated a million cents to the Starfish Foundation and the Ethembini Children’s Home.

The donation was initiated by the school’s millionaires club. This elective club is run during school hours. One of the school teachers, Jenny du Preez said that 15 pupils are part of the club. “The pupils get together and brainstorm ideas on how to reach their target of a million cents, which is R10 000,” said Du Preez.

Through their efforts, the club has had various fundraisers with each pupil doing research on the charity of their choice. “Each pupil then has to ‘sell’ their charity idea to their peers in order to find the winning charity,” she said.

Du Preez added that the pupils are taken out of their comfort zones, while learning an array of skills. “As the saying goes, ‘The first million is always the hardest,’ pupils did not only reach their target, they also surpassed it,” she said.

The club consists of thirteen Grade 4 to 7 pupils. “Their goal was to raise one million cents for a charity that was chosen by the pupils. This they did by means of arranging, and manning a car wash, a Barnyard fundraising evening, a raffle, market day and selling novelties to fellow pupils,” said Du Preez.

Their first ‘million’ was presented to the Starfish Foundation.

Du Preez concludes that they exceeded their goal and had an extra two hundred thousand cents (R2 000) which were presented by the group, their teacher Du Preez, and the school’s principal, Philip Kokot to Ethembini Children’s home on 2 June.
