Suspects on the run after robbery

SOPHIATOWN – Police are in search of suspects who robbed a woman in her home.

A resident had the shock of her life when she was held at gunpoint and robbed in Sophiatown.

The terrible incident happened at 6am on 9 June.

According to the chairperson of the Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch, Dauw Steyn, two male suspects entered the house on Bernard Street. “One of the suspects held the resident at gunpoint,” said Steyn. He said that the suspects managed to make off with laptops, cellphones and other electronics. He added that because the house is close to the Melville Koppies West, he and a few members of the neighbourhood watch then conducted a general search of the area. “When we got there we saw credit cards and bank statements belonging to the woman who was robbed,” said Steyn.

He also said that it was here that they spotted a man who started to run away when he saw them approach. Steyn added that a chase then ensued and that the man was eventually apprehended on 4th Street, in Sophiatown.

Sophiatown Police spokesperson Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn said that a case of housebreaking and armed robbery was opened.”The credit cards found did belong to the victim,” said WO De Bruyn. He added however, that they are still in search of two suspects as the man who was brought in, was ruled out as a suspect.
