Car theft on the rise in Melville

MELVILLE – The Brixton Police are working hand-in-hand with security companies and insurance companies to cut down car theft.

The Brixton Police have been experiencing an increase in the theft of motor vehicles and theft out of motor vehicles.

Brixton spokesperson, Jeanette Backhoff, said that there have been several cars stolen as well as property stolen from cars in the past couple of weeks. She said that the thefts happened throughout the day and the hotspots are 7th Avenue, and 5th and 6th streets in Melville. She said that it happens usually when people park in the streets and go into restaurants.

Backhoff said that the Brixton Police are working hand-in-hand with security companies to try and keep the thefts under control. She said that objects that have been stolen from vehicles are laptops and phones that are left openly on car seats.

She said that some people are negligent and report property that was lost or stolen elsewhere. “We are also working very closely with insurance companies to reduce false claims reported,” said Backhoff.
